ARCH1202_ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 4

Assessment 2: Concept Design
The Coal Loader

MASTER PLAN
To me, an experimental art space is not just a place to display art, but also each element on the site can become an experimental art product. And in this heritage site, I want to bring back the history atmosphere by creating a site which can be seen as a monument.

Remaining the platform’s shape and its heritage look, just adding steel element which were used mostly in the past of the coal loader site. The steel frame follows a grid system that will frame the landscape in specific views. The pedestrians will experience differently while they walk around the garden, as directed by the pathway. It’s a ramp with different RL level.

ZONE AND CIRCULATION
I use the existing building's footprint, but change the use of space. As there's already a staff parking on the site, the private space for staff will be placed in the old entrance. All new public space will be relocated at the new entrance which I think it's easier to be accessed for visitor who drive to the site. Then it can become the main square, the central of the whole site. New ramp following the rock wall connects upper and lower site, creates comfort circulation for disabled visitor. All of the ramps on site work for guiding purpose.

There is a square that connects 4 tunnels. There are a series of experience while standing in front of the entrances of the tunnels, walking in one of the tunnels, standing at the square area, the real entrance which is outside and the fake entrance inside...

The garden space can be divided into 2 spaces. The one near the entrance can be seen more public space than the rest. When pedestrian approach the garden, they have to follow the path, start from first point which is the entrance. Then they hit the 2nd point which is the art space. Now, they will decide to visit the space or keep walking through the garden. The point of locating the art space in central makes the first half of the garden become more used. They are the same grass surface, but the rest of garden can be used as picnic area, which is more quite than the one near the entrance.

Steel frame creates some kind of shading on the site, but it's not the main use for shading purpose. The site look less busy by having the less of number of frame.
